Why not just one longer lecture for greater convenience? </strong><br>\nStudies have shown that the average attention span is 15-20 minutes.&nbsp; I also took advice from the industry standards (for MOOCs) and other NUS professors who have experimented with online lectures that they&nbsp; should be kept to 15 min to 20 minutes for ideal attention and retention. So one lecture may seem more convenient, but may not be ideal for learning. There is another practical reason for shorter lectures. Lectures that are too long will take too much time to upload and download and are more likely to &lsquo;hang&rsquo;, especially when the lecture files are big and contain many graphics.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Why are online lectures shorter than face-to-face lectures? </strong><br>\nIn fact, having taught this module for almost ten years now, I can assure you that the material I cover in these online lectures is actually more than in my face-to-face lectures. A typical face-to-face lecture is 1 hour 35 mins. Time is usually wasted in the first ten minutes waiting for students to filter in, and another ten minutes are usually gazetted for students to take a break during the lecture so that they can recharge. My face-to-face lectures were also &lsquo;broken up&rsquo; into 15 to 20 minute segments with each segment interspersed with mini-interaction sessions or short videos. But these interaction sessions were not as interactive as they could be because of the sprawling size of the lecture theatre, and students&rsquo; hesitance about speaking up during a lecture. With the online lectures, I cover the content in the webcasts and interactivity is reserved for the tutorial, and students watch suggested videos on their own time. Essentially therefore, the same material is covered, but time shifted.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>How are online lectures better than face-to-face lectures? </strong><br>\nStudents who are unable to grasp a concept can replay the relevant segments of the online lecture, which they cannot do for face-to-face lectures. Students can also watch the videos at a time of their choosing (taking into account their personal ideal learning times), rather than being restricted to a fixed time to attend a lecture. Students can therefore cut down on travelling time.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>How are online lectures inferior to face-to-face lectures? </strong><br>\nIn a face-to-face lecture, if students cannot grasp what the lecturer is saying, they can immediately ask questions and signal their confusion. In principle, this is true. In practice however, students are not too keen to reveal their ignorance in the presence of their peers and are also averse to asking questions in a lecture setting. From my experience, although I always ask my students in face-to-face lectures if they have any questions to raise, I have almost always received a nil response. Hence, I have complemented the online lectures with tutorials and online forums where students can raise questions in a less overwhelming environment.<br>\nSome students feel that face-to-face lectures are better because they are forced to sit through it rather than having to ensure their own learning by watching the videos on their own time, during which they may take long breaks during their viewing and get distracted by other online stimuli. Yes, online lectures do require self-discipline on the part of the student. So it is important that you take charge of your own learning and the tutorials are meant to help you keep to schedule because you should ideally have watched the relevant lectures and read the relevant readings before attending the tutorial. Students who do not do so will find that they do not benefit as much from the tutorial.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>This flipped classroom model is new to me. I&rsquo;ve never taken a class like this before! How can I make the most of it? </strong><br>\n<ul>\n\t<li>\n\t\tWatch the lectures on a weekly basis at a time that you find conducive for learning.
