focuses on the questions: How do we know what we know? And by what methods can we come to know what we know? In short, this module explores what makes academic research different than journalism or public policy, how research is conducted and communicated, and how academic research forms a particular kind of knowledge production.
\n
\nMore specifically, this module examines the theories of knowledge and methods of inquiry that are used across disciplines to study globalisation and its effects. It introduces students to the means, materials, techniques, and ethical issues entailed by different methods of inquiry. Four themes recur throughout the module:
\n1. How are research questions formulated and investigations conducted?
\n2. How does language influence inquiry?
\n3. How does context influence inquiry?
\n4. How can different means, materials, and methods of inquiry be brought together (or not) to provide a holistic analysis?
\n
\nStudents are evaluated on participation, short preparatory assignments, an essay, and an extended research project culminating in a literature review.
\n
\nThis is a required module for all Global Studies majors, but non-majors are also welcome.","Order":1},{"ID":"1e5f053b-8835-4692-be49-41f07234cfff","Title":"Learning Outcomes","Description":"Students who have successfully completed this module will be able to
\n· Describe basic issues in research design, including concepts, measurement, and sampling.
\n· Describe the difference between quantitative, qualitative, mixed method, and disciplinary research designs.
\n· Describe the merits and limits of different quantitative and qualitative research methods for research in global studies.
\n· Interpret and explain symbolic, visual, and quantitative representations as used in the study of globalisation.
\n· Formulate a researchable question related to globalisation.
\n· Collaborate as part of a research team.
\n· Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
