Within this broad topic, we will concentrate on three important themes: the continuing importance of the pre-modern intellectual legacy, the crucial role of gender in the construction of the Japanese nation-state, and the problematic relationship between the thinker and the state. \t\r\n\r\nDevelopment of critical reading and writing skills will be emphasized; we will discuss methods of improving these skills throughout the module.\t\r\n\r\nNo knowledge of the Japanese language or of specialized scholarly vocabulary is required.
