It contextualizes the evolution of science and medicine in the socio-cultural world of China, with special focuses on the period from 1550 to 1950.
\r\n
\r\nThe reading consists of primary texts in translation and secondary scholarship. While we engage current scholarly discussion, we will also develop through the reading our interpretive strategies regarding the relationship between science and medicine in political social, and cultural history. This course will pose several broad questions: What is special about the knowledge of science and medicine in China? How did this knowledge change overtime? What are the significance and consequences of these changes? How do we them to larger conceptual frameworks, such as modernity?
\r\n
\r\nThe class is divided into two parts: the first part will focus on the development of scientific and medical knowledge in traditional China (ancient period – 1550), and the second part will focus on how science and science became a crucial part of a
\r\nmodernist in China following from the late imperial to the modern periods.
\r\n
\r\nThe course will be taught in English.
