This monumental novel in 120 chapters occupies an unusual place in sinological scholarship: at once the fantastic story of a boy who is a reincarnated rock, but also perhaps our best source for understanding real life in eighteenth-century China. We will be pairing tenchapter sections of the novel with secondary scholarship on the novel and on topics in legal, gender, ethnic, and literary history.
