\n\tYou will learn how to effectively and responsibly produce social media content of different types (such as wikis, blogs and audiovisual material) for different purposes (communication with friends, entertainment, creating new ties, expressing one’s views, engaging others in collective action, etc.). We will also try to uncover together what makes certain platforms 'tick', why some social media sites flourish, while others fail, and importantly, how we can tap into social theory and practice to design or improve upon existing social media solutions. In this manner it is hoped that the module will not only help you become a smarter practitioner, but also heighten your interest in social science research.

\n\t· Design of Social Media
\n\t· Community Design
\n\t· Legal, Ethical and Policy issues
\n\t· Critical Perspective on Social Media
\n\t
\n\t
\n\tThis seminar, apart from participation marks, has three major graded components:
\n\t
\n\t· [Tutorials/Seminars]: student-led presentations, tutorials and class activities based on given readings and related concepts
\n\n\t· [Tests]: a mid-term essay/test, and
\n\t· [Others(fieldwork, projects)]: a group research project.
\n\t
\n\tThe aim of student-led class activities is to ensure that students reflect critically on the material and that they try to distill what is more relevant for them, also bringing in new ideas in an effort to engage the class with the material. Emphasis will be placed on how students develop their own understanding of the readings and how they can create associations between material given by the lecturer, outside sources, and their own experience with social media, and then communicate these effectively to the class.
\n\t
\n\tThe aim of the group research project is to facilitate the application of theories and principles identified during lectures and other class activities. Students conduct original research to extend their understanding of the role of social media and the part they can play in shaping the future of such media in Singapore and beyond. Individual performance will be assessed during the group’s presentation in class, where every group member will have to present a part of the work for which he/she was responsible and will be marked independently (10%). The written report of the group will be given one mark for all members (30%). Total marks for the project: 40%.
\n\t
\n\tIn summary, assessment will be as follows:
\n\t(a) total individual (i.e. differentiated) assessment for the module: midterm (20%) + student-led in- class presentations (20%) + class participation (20%) + contribution to project presentation (10%) = 70%
\n\t(b) total undifferentiated group assessment: project report (30%).
