Many of its foundational concepts sprang from Freud's life-long engagement with literature. The 'application' of psychoanalytic concepts to the interpretation of literary works will therefore be an important part of our approach. In applying theory to texts, we will identify and explore the plural and contradictory desires that make up literary discourse in particular, and the production of meaning, generally, just as our selections of literary works will help to exemplify key concepts in the psychoanalytic tradition.","ModuleCredit":"4","Workload":"3-0-0-0-7","Prerequisite":"Cohort 2011 and before: EN1101E or GEK1000. \r\n\t\t\t\tApproach: Because students’ knowledge of Freud is likely to be limited (and opinions of his intellectual legacy prejudiced by a misplaced attention to the role of sex in the formation of the individual self), the first part of this course will introduce key concepts in psychoanalysis to the class; we will focus on the linguistic structure of the dynamics these concepts describe. We will follow foundational psychoanalytic concepts from their origins with Freud at the turn of the century, into the mid-twentieth century thought of Jacques Lacan, through their feminist appropriation and revision in the recent work of Julia Kristeva. Throughout this survey, we will identify and explore the links between psychoanalysis and literary form (e.g. the unconscious, desire, the ‘compulsion to repeat’, remembrance and forgetting, resistance to the Cartesian crisis of a mind-body duality through attention to the sentient, bodily origins of human speech). Where possible, these themes will be explored through literary examples. \r\n\t\t\t\t \r\n\t\t\t\tBut we will not use literature merely as an “example” for illuminating the claims of psychoanalysis. We will be concerned with the form taken by desires that motivate literary narration; desires which are, at the same time, prohibited from direct expression in the text. So, we will attend to how the unconscious shapes everyday discourse, and how narrations of our own histories may be regarded in the same way as a reader interprets fiction. As such, our method of reading in this course may be identified as an ‘hermeneutics of suspicion’ – an approach to literary and cultural works that assumes that motives and meanings have been disguised, and effectively reworked, through the production of other meanings. The burden of ‘interpretation’, assumed by readers and psychoanalysts alike, will require students to develop critical reading skills through the course. \r\n\t\t\t\t \r\n\t\t\t\tThe course is intended as an intensive introduction to literary and cultural study, as derived from psychoanalytic theory; it provides a survey of key texts from seminal figures within the psychoanalytic tradition, from Freud, Lacan and post-Lacanian uses of this history; in general, it serves to introduce students to the styles and approaches of an important strand in Critical Theory, and is therefore a intended to encourage and develop students' interest in critical approaches to literary study. \r\n\t\t\t\t \r\n\t\t\t\t
