\n
\n15% participation. 1 mark will be minused for every unexplained/unexcused absence from tutorials, but you don't get marks just for being there. I am prepared to start from zero....
\n
\nWhat I will be looking for for participation - well, obviously, for a start, contribution to the discussion. Obviously too, sharpness of commentary is good, but I also take into account honest attempt to think things through and process, i.e. effort. So you shouldn't feel that only brightness is rewarded, as I reward effort as well. Third, an attempt to engage classmates, help develop their ideas, etc. is also important.
\n
\n
\n15% presentation - handout required. No bullet points. You are required to write in proper sentences, have a focus and preferably an argument.
\n10% - Quiz - MCQ. In case you think these are easy, think again....
\n
\n40% long term essay. Topics will be in the workbin. You are free to devise your own topic in consultation with me.
\n
\nWhat you will be graded on:
\n
\n - your argument/argumentation - what your claim is, how you establish it, how persuasive you are, how you use evidence. Also taken into account will be your (implicit) ability to open up the question in both relevant and interesting ways.
\n- analysis of texts - the more nuanced, the better. I like close readings to support larger points, where possible, but I don't insist on it. It doesn't need to be my MY way of looking at things. If you can persuade me of something I didn't think of/didn't agree with, I'm quite prepared to change my mind.
\n- writing/English/style - this will count for something, but won't overset your marks dramatically if the rest is good.
\n- care - I do dislike sloppiness of presentation, formatting, footnoting, referencing, etc.
\n - secondary readings - these are not strictly necessary, meaning you will not be given MORE marks for using these, nor FEWER for not using these. If, however, you are making use of secondary readings, you will be judged on how well you use them - integration of material, usefulness of quotes, propriety in referencing, etc. So don't just quote for its own sake.
\n
\nThe x-factor - a bit of spark helps. It's possible to get an A with extreme competence and no spark, but spark is good. By 'spark' I both mean originality and something that shows through of interest, an investment in thinking through something.
\n
\nNo one will fault you for using stuff raised in lectures/tutorials, but obviously, those who only give your points back to you with no 'value added' as it were are going to be less interesting. While the course in part looks at Romantic Egotism (as it were!), that doesn't extend to the lecturer, who would much much rather hear what you have to say, than rehear what I have to say.....
\n
\nNeedless to say, any kind of plagiarism will meet severe penalties. Anything not referenced will be considered plagiarism, whether in your own words or not. Words from someone else ought to be in inverted commas, to signal what is yours and what is not.
\nPenalties for plagiarism: borrowed from somewhere, or someone else wrote it: failed and reported to department and faculty- it goes on your record
\nSubstantial plagiarism: more than a couple of sentences or ideas, and it's a zero. Report to department and faculty, ditto
\nMinor plagiarism - a term or sentence borrowed, without reference, a grade down. Report to department.
\n
\nDont try the 'I gave a reference in the bibliography' tack. That does not get you off the hook. Each borrowing must be referenced either in-text or in a footnote/endnote. Otherwise charges of slipperiness can be levied.

If you are not present for the test, it is your responsibility to let me know and provide an MC within 2 days. If you do not, no re-test will be allowed. Mobiles are to be switched off during lectures and tutorials. Essays have to be handed in with a coversheet which states that you have read and understood the university guidelines on plagiarism. No essays will be accepted without this signed statement. And of course anyone actually found plagiarising will be in serious trouble, not just with me, but with the Department and Faculty.

If this is the case, and you are not allocated the group of your choice, then you will either have to find someone willing to swop with you (I will not be overseeing this as it is not for me to bully someone into changing if you have been so foolish as to sign up with only one possible slot available to you), or drop the module. My room (venue) can only seat 12 students (already cramped) and I will not make it more cramped for the 12 already there. So I'm sorry if either there is a genuine problem (in which case you should have chosen your modules and times more wisely), or you were hoping to get a particular tutorial group because of 'free days' (university isn't about 'free days' - it's about education), or you need to work outside (but again, the university is concerned with your education, not your job - if you have a real financial need, speak to the Deanery - there are bursaries available, or speak to me and I'll see if I can think of anything to help) and if there is no real need, then the job should be what gets rescheduled). I'm not unsympathetic, but there are limits on room size.
