\r\nThis course aims to enhance students’ understanding of population ageing and its economic effects. The challenges and opportunities faced by ageing economies, along with the implications for policies will be examined. The course begins with the concepts of population ageing and examines the current ageing trends across countries. It introduces the demographic transition model and identifies the main drivers of population ageing. The economic effects will be discussed next, which includes labour supply and productivity effects; implications for consumption and savings; changes in capital accumulation, investment and economic growth; effects on fiscal pressures and budget sustainability; the problem of retirement adequacy; and influences on trade balances and current account balances, etc. This course will also focus the policy options available to governments to mitigate the effects of population ageing, and discusses the trade-offs amongst these policies. References and discussions will be based on the experiences of various ageing economies and Singapore.

\r\n
\r\nPopulation ageing is a global phenomenon. This course aims to enhance students’ understanding of population ageing and its effects, as well as the challenges and opportunities faced by ageing economies. At the end of the course, students should understand the role and challenges brought about with population ageing, as well as the implications for policy.
\r\n
\r\nThis course will enable students to participate in discussions of ageing-related issues and enhances their understanding of government policies and their limitations. Students can also identify the gaps and provide recommendations on what can be done to maximise the potential of ageing economies.

\r\n3) Course structure
\r\n
\r\nClass sessions are of 3-hour duration per week. Each session will involve a lecture, students’ presentation of weekly assignments and discussions. The last two weeks will be set aside for projects presentations.
