Through textbook readings and discussions of seminal articles and more recent empirical applications in health economics, students will learn the economic way of thinking. They will be given the opportunity to showcase these skills through a series of research papers written throughout the semester that will culminate with a final manuscript that provides an in-depth analysis of a critical health issue.

\r\n\tUpon completion of the module, the student will be able to:
\r\n\tThe course provides an introduction to health economics, including the related issues of health care financing and cost-containment. It examines the rationale for governmental intervention in the health care market, the determinants of demand and supply, costing and pricing, issues of equity, efficiency and effectiveness in health care, valuation of life and health status, and methods of health economic evaluation.
\r\n\t
\r\n\tThe first week of the module will be dedicated to the economic concept of market failure, illustrated by topics in the economics of obesity. During the following week, the students will be required to select the public health subject of their choice that features a market failure. Throughout the semester, the students will progressively write a manuscript describing the selected public health issue, explaining the market failure, and recommending policies addressing it. In parallel, the course will cover all major subjects of health economics, which will provide the students with the necessary economic theory to complete their manuscript.
