\nPP5291 SECURITY IN ASIA-PACIFIC
\n
\nThis course examines the security issues in the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on the Korean Peninsula, the Taiwan Strait, and the Sino-Japanese territory disputes, and the South China Sea. The principal issues we will discuss in this seminar include: tension between the two Koreas, North Korean nuclear issue and its impact, tension between Mainland China and Taiwan, the Sino-Japanese relationship, with a focus on the territory disputes between the two Asian powers, maritime disputes in the South China Sea, policies and interactions of the United States, China, Japan and the other powers in the region, and future prospects of the reunifications of the two Koreas, China/Taiwan, and potential solution (or management) of territory disputes in East and South China Seas. This course is aimed at enhancing the students’ research and analytical ability, enriching their knowledge on these issues which involve vital stakes of all the regional powers, including U.S., China, Japan, Korea, and ASEAN, and deepening their comprehension that the policies by various state players towards these issues have substantial impacts on regional peace and stability.
