\n\t\t\t\tBrief Description: \n\t\t\t\tThis freshman seminar offers a sociological and historic look at the theme park, a type of leisure increasingly ubiquitous in the contemporary environment. Through the examination of various theme parks, and studies that critically assess their meanings and roles in contemporary society, students will be challenged to think critically about aspects of leisure and popular culture that shape our world views. They will also be challenged to think about questions such as “What is culture?”; “What is authentic culture?”; and “How does culture change and adapt across the globe in this age of mobility?”. | \n\t\t
\n\t\t\t\tAssessment: \n\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\tClass participation will count for 10% of the grade. Students are expected to keep up with readings and contribute to each week’s seminar. Students will be asked to be involved in various types of presentations in class, as well as participate in discussions which will be formulating ideas about researching theme parks. In these presentations and discussions students will engage with the course literature, and formulate their own projects for further research. \n\t\t\t\tA fieldtrip will be taken to a theme park, so that students can make observations, and do some field research that has been stimulated by ideas from the course readings. 4 short essay assignments will be given to help build the students to a larger project which will be based on the fieldtrip. These essays will include literature reviews, designing research questions and discussions of methodologies (formulating questions for surveys and interviews to be undertaken on the class field trip) and write ups of interview data and observations data from the field trip. \n\t\t\t\tThese 4 short essays constitute 40% of the grade (10% each). \n\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\tThe final research project, which will bring together the students’ research both empirical and library, will constitute 30% of the grade. | \n\t\t
