{"ModuleCode":"CO5233","ModuleTitle":"Qualitative Methods in Public Health","Department":"Saw Swee Hock School Of Public Health","ModuleDescription":"Qualitative methods in Public Health will familiarize students with the range of related data collection and analytic methods, as well as ethical considerations and ways to best communicate this approach. Students will learn practical techniques to improve the quality of data collection, including: In depth interviews, focus groups and observational methods. We will also explore lesser-known approaches such as using photo voice or how to ‘walk through spaces’. Emphasis will be given to data management and transparency in analyses, the best ways of doing these, using practical policy relevant methods.","ModuleCredit":"4","Workload":"0-3-0-3-4","Lecturers":["Hildon Zoe Jane-Lara"],"IVLE":[{"Announcements":null,"Forums":[],"Workbins":[],"Webcasts":[],"Gradebooks":[],"Polls":[],"Multimedia":[],"LessonPlan":[],"ID":"168fb3ab-4b03-4e4a-98fa-8a9ffd09de61","CourseLevel":"1","CourseCode":"CO5233","CourseName":"QUALITATIVE METHODS IN PUBLIC HEALTH","CourseDepartment":"","CourseSemester":"Semester 2","CourseAcadYear":"2014/2015","CourseOpenDate":"/Date(1417017600000+0800)/","CourseOpenDate_js":"2014-11-27T00:00:00","CourseCloseDate":"/Date(1438358340000+0800)/","CourseCloseDate_js":"2015-07-31T23:59:00","CourseMC":"0","isActive":"Y","Permission":"S","Creator":{"UserID":null,"Name":"Tan Joo Ee","Email":null,"Title":null,"UserGuid":"5f67395d-bd6f-49a4-ba4d-0b9ec49ed152","AccountType":null},"hasGradebookItems":false,"hasTimetableItems":false,"hasGroupsItems":false,"hasClassGroupsForSignUp":false,"hasGuestRosterItems":true,"hasClassRosterItems":true,"hasWeblinkItems":false,"hasLecturerItems":true,"hasDescriptionItems":true,"hasReadingItems":false,"hasAnnouncementItems":false,"hasProjectGroupItems":false,"hasProjectGroupsForSignUp":false,"hasConsultationItems":false,"hasConsultationSlotsForSignUp":false,"hasLessonPlanItems":true,"Badge":0,"BadgeAnnouncement":0,"WebLinks":[],"Lecturers":[{"ID":"403f4bb6-3cf6-4a16-aefe-f7e1a1ca02d8","User":{"UserID":null,"Name":"Hildon Zoe Jane-Lara","Email":null,"Title":null,"UserGuid":"2763f4ed-3c2b-454a-a693-d9cb963565d2","AccountType":null},"Role":"Lecturer ","Order":2,"ConsultHrs":null}],"Descriptions":[{"ID":"1e5f053b-8835-4692-be49-41f07234cfff","Title":"Learning Outcomes","Description":"Description: Qualitative methods in Public Health will familiarize students with the range of related data collection and analytic methods, as well as ethical considerations and ways to best communicate this approach. \r\n
\r\nAims & Objectives: To equip students with the understanding of what underpins the quantitative approach & how best to use it in public health. Upon completion, students will be able to:
\r\n1. Describe qualitative methods, & when the different types are most appropriately used.
\r\n2. Understand the ethical debate related to the qualitative methods contrasted to other approaches in public health.
\r\n3. Describe & apply the qualitative design cycle.
\r\n4. Undertake data collection for in-depth-interviews.
\r\n5. Setup & facilitate focus group disucssions.
\r\n6. Apply different approaches to observation (structured; participatory) & related data collection methods.
\r\n7. Manage & code data for thematic analyses.
\r\n8. Undertake a content analyses using media data.
\r\n9. Critically review the qualitative method identifying validity & reliability.
\r\n10. Undertake framework analyses, following the Ritchie & Lewis method.
\r\n11. Write up analyses (using the COREQ statement), & present it, clearly, concisely & creatively.
