{"ModuleCode":"CE5112","ModuleTitle":"Structural Support Systems for Excavation","Department":"Civil & Environmental Engineering","ModuleDescription":"Students will learn the various methods of excavation construction and apply the fundamental knowledge of structural mechanics to design a wide range of earth retaining walls and their support systems. The key focus is to develop the capability to design various types of retaining walls, ground anchorage, walers, struts, kingposts, bracing and connection details. It will also cover the design of working platforms which are often required in deep excavations, as well as methods of jointing and splicing to allow incorporation of instrumentation. The course will cover both steel and reinforced concrete retaining walls, such as sheetpile, soldier piles, timber lagging, contiguous bored piles, diaphragm walls and etc. The course enables students to acquire further knowledge on soil-structure interaction and gain practical skills through the lectures, case studies and design projects.","ModuleCredit":"4","Workload":"3-0-0-3-4","Prerequisite":"CE5108 Earth-Retaining Structures, with 1st priority to MSc (Geotechnical) and 2nd priority to MSc (CE) specializing in Geotechnical","ExamDate":"2015-04-28T09:00+0800","ExamOpenBook":true,"ExamDuration":"P2H30M","ExamVenue":"E3-06-08/09","Types":["Module"],"Lecturers":["Richard Liew"],"IVLE":[{"Announcements":null,"Forums":[],"Workbins":[],"Webcasts":[],"Gradebooks":[],"Polls":[],"Multimedia":[],"LessonPlan":[],"ID":"a927bafc-d849-4c96-a190-0bc5ad78d1bd","CourseLevel":"1","CourseCode":"CE5112","CourseName":"EXCAVATION SUPPORT SYSTEMS","CourseDepartment":"","CourseSemester":"Semester 2","CourseAcadYear":"2014/2015","CourseOpenDate":"/Date(1421078400000+0800)/","CourseOpenDate_js":"2015-01-13T00:00:00","CourseCloseDate":"/Date(1431187140000+0800)/","CourseCloseDate_js":"2015-05-09T23:59:00","CourseMC":"4","isActive":"N","Permission":"S","Creator":{"UserID":null,"Name":"Richard Liew","Email":null,"Title":null,"UserGuid":"9e47d7f1-d116-494e-ae3a-615c93608ab4","AccountType":null},"hasGradebookItems":false,"hasTimetableItems":true,"hasGroupsItems":false,"hasClassGroupsForSignUp":false,"hasGuestRosterItems":true,"hasClassRosterItems":true,"hasWeblinkItems":false,"hasLecturerItems":true,"hasDescriptionItems":true,"hasReadingItems":false,"hasAnnouncementItems":false,"hasProjectGroupItems":false,"hasProjectGroupsForSignUp":false,"hasConsultationItems":false,"hasConsultationSlotsForSignUp":false,"hasLessonPlanItems":false,"Badge":0,"BadgeAnnouncement":0,"WebLinks":[],"Lecturers":[{"ID":"a597f851-b145-45fa-8ff0-742e3f6cc97c","User":{"UserID":null,"Name":"Richard Liew","Email":null,"Title":null,"UserGuid":"9e47d7f1-d116-494e-ae3a-615c93608ab4","AccountType":null},"Role":"Lecturer ","Order":1,"ConsultHrs":null}],"Descriptions":[{"ID":"1e5f053b-8835-4692-be49-41f07234cfff","Title":"Learning Outcomes","Description":"
OBJECTIVES
\r\nStudents will learn to design retaining wall and strutting systems for excavation work. They shall learn the safety, economy and construction issues related to deep xcavation. At the end of the lessons, students are expected to produce acceptable technical designs for wall and strutting structures, components for excavation construction, and have an ability to use modern engineering tools for design.
\r\n· Students shall develop the capability to produce acceptable design for strutting support systems and retaining walls and their critical components using design tables and computer analysis tools.
\r\n· Students will understand the safety and construction issues related to the excavation construction.
\r\n· Students will have an ability to use modern engineering tools for the design of such structures.
