\n\tThe goal of this module is to develop three aspects: 1) communicative competence; 2) independent learning skills; and 3) basic understandings of intercultural awareness and attitudes, through learning Japanese language. In order to achieve this goal, it is very important for you to utilise the class hours most effectively and efficiently, that is to be well prepared for lectures and tutorials and to actively participate in classroom practice and activities

\n\t8-1. Lectures (2 hours/week)
\n\tLectures will be conducted both in English and in Japanese. We will discuss and practise the grammatical patterns, socio-cultural issues and vocabulary which you will practise more in the tutorial classes during the following week.

\n\tBefore a lecture:
\n\t1. Review the contents of what you have learned so far.
\n\t2. Briefly go over the sections I-IV of assigned lesson(s) for the week in Translation & Grammatical Notes in English (TG).
\n\t3. Listen to ことば vocabulary on CD/IVLE and repeat after it.
\n\t4. Read 文型 ( ぶんけい: sentence patterns), 例文 ( れいぶん: example sentences), 会話 ( かいわ: conversation), in MT referring to the TG and figure out 1) grammatical patterns, 2) meaning and contexts to be used, and 3) functions.
\n\t5. Listen to 文型 , 例文 and 会話 on CD/IVLE and repeat after them.
\n\t6. Read aloud 練習 practice A and 練習 B in MT and analyse them.
\n\t7. Download the Lecture Handout from the IVLE Workbin. Try to answer the questions which are given in the handout. Specify the items which you are not sure or you do not understand.
\n\t8. Prepare for a short quiz. ‘Lecture Quiz’ is scheduled almost in every lecture. Study Grammar Explanation in TG, Lecture Handout and all other materials of the lesson(s) on that day.

\n\t8-2. Tutorials (TA 2hours and TB 2 hours/week)
\n\tAll tutorial classes are conducted Entirely in Japanese. In tutorials, you will practise communicating in Japanese by applying the grammatical patterns and vocabulary that you have learnt from textbooks and lectures. During tutorials, you are expected to participate actively in all classroom activities and practices. You may ask questions in English only after class or during consultation hours. You are expected to come to the classes well-prepared to maximize the opportunity for oral and aural practices.
\n\t
\n\tFor all tutorials:
\n\tReview what you have learnt in textbooks and lectures. Do the designated homework, referring to “Course Schedule” and “Tutorial Schedule” in the Students’ Packet.
\n\t
\n\tFor TA and TB tutorials:
\n\tThese tutorials are designed for you to practise the new vocabulary and grammatical patterns in order to be able to use them in appropriate contexts. Before you attend a tutorial class, memorize vocabulary and review grammatical patterns for assigned lesson(s) in the tutorial schedule. The number of assigned practices of 練習 ( れんしゅう :Practice) A, B, C, and 問題 ( もんだい : Questions) in MT are listed in the tutorial schedule. You can find the answers for 問題 at the end of MT to check your answers by yourself. After checking target grammatical patterns in TG and 練習 A in MT, practise 練習 B, C and 問題 in MT with CD/IVLE and you should be able to say them fluently with no hesitation. You will also have listening practice in TA and TB, using the materials in the Students’ Packet. It is also important for you to practise oral skills with CD/IVLE and your classmates as much as possible.
\n\t
\n\tKanji Practice in TB tutorial:
\n\tRegarding kanji practice, you need to study each new kanji on your own before you attend TA/TB tutorial. After you have learnt each kanji in the assigned Kanji Unit in your Minna no NihongoShokyū I KanjiEigobanKanji I (English Edition), practice them and write hiragana reading and furigana ( readings in hiragana on top of kanji ) of each kanji in the Kanji Practice sheet which is in the Students’ Packet. By the end of TA/TB class, students should be able to read and write each kanji accurately and understand the meaning.
\n\t
\n\tDialogue performance in TA tutorial:
\n\tIn order to perform 会話 conversation in MT well, you need to understand the theme of each conversation and its context (e.g. What is this conversation all about? Where does this conversation take place? Who is talking to whom? In which manner? etc.). It means that reciting the conversation in class is not good enough for performance. You need not only to memorise each conversation but also to check and reproduce correct pronunciation, intonation, accent and body language to perform it in class. Practise assigned conversation in the tutorial schedule with audio materials of CD/IVLE and videos of IVLE well enough to be able to say them fluently without text so that you can perform role plays based on the conversation as well.

\n\t11. Grading
\n\tYour final grade in LAJ1201 will be determined on your Continuous Assessment (CA) score as well as the result of the Final Examination.
\n\t

\n\tFinal Exam (25%):

\n\tModule Placement Policy
\n\tLAJ1201 Japanese 1 is designed to develop language skills for students with no/very little previous knowledge of Japanese. In order to ensure fairness in grading, every student must be placed to an appropriate module according to his/her current proficiency in Japanese. If a student fails to inform his/her previous experience of learning Japanese to CLS teaching and administration staff at the beginning of the semester and his/her proficiency is later found not suitable to the module he/she registers, he/she may be removed from the module by CLS during the semester and be given the grade according to the University regulations (i.e. F).
