\r\n\tThis module provides students with a practical skill base for further studies of Japan by developingcritical reading, writing and research skills. The module is for those majoring or intending to major in the field of Japanese studies. After several sessions practicing critical reading, you will concentrate on writing a 5000 word paper on a topic of your choice. The topic should be well researched and the paper will survey the discourse on this topic, identifying research methodologies and arguments, gaps in knowlege and avenues for possible future research. You will not be asked to use primary sources or to do your own empirical research. In the course of writing the paper you will be guided through the steps of choosing a topic, defining the purpose of your paper, writing an introduction and from there on the paper proper. Each step will be discussed in class and students are expected to provide feedback to each other and to support each other. The objective is for you to produce a paper that you can be proud of.
\r\n\r\n\tPlease note:
\r\n\tStudents having already decided or who are considering to major in Japanese Studies should take this module as early as possible to build a solid foundation for their future studies, not only in Japanese Studies but also in general. The skills learned in this moduel will also be usefull for other modules.
\r\n\tWhile this module is coded as a level 2000 module, it is aimed at and very well suited for first year students who have taken JS1101e in their first semester at NUS. This essential module is a prerequisite for JS3101. Taking it early ensures that you later do not run into problems in terms of taking JS3101, for example after having been away on exchange to Japan. JS2101 and JS3101 must be taken at NUS and cannot be substituted by modules taken in Japan during exchange.
\r\n\tDuring the first part of the module we will critically read selected articles on Japan from several disciplines. The second part of the module will focus on writing a substantial paper.
