\n\n\tA study of the role of trade, commerce and business is imperative to understand the making of Asia and its dynamism. This seminar module examines the historical development of Asian business. A number of themes will be taken up such as the 'Asian bazaar,' trading diasporas and entreprenuerial minorities, informal credit and banking, business organisation, networks, family and firm, technology transfer, business and politics and 'state' and entrepreneurship. These themes will be studied with the help of case studies which will focus on particular historical periods and regions. A detailed week wise schedule with readings will be provided in class.
\n\t
\n\tThe objective is to investigate the development of Asian business in historical perspective and to enrich our understanding of Singapore's development as a regional hub of commerce and business transactions.

Student's initiative and active participation are important. In addition to class participation, students would be required a book review, a literature review and a research essay. The book review would constutite 20 per cent of assesment; the literature review would constitute 20 per cent and the research essay 30 per cent of the final grade. The research essay would be on a topic of their choice which addresses one of the major themes of the course. It would enable them to explore more intensely a particular topic that interests them. The topic could be discussed informally with the lecturer. 20 per cent would be for group presentations and another 10 per cent for general participation in class.
