\nI personally resist having very tightly plotted aims and objectives for literary studies modules, and I think that each student may well take something slightly different away from the class. What I'd hope is that most students would leave the class with a greater knowledge of Singapore Literature in English, some ideas about how literary texts work to give us greater understanding of Singapore society and our role in it, and a desire and a hunger to read more, write criticism, and even write literary texts of their own. If you are an exchange student, contact me if you'd like to discuss whether a module you've taken at your home university would serve as an equivalent. An interest in Singapore writing, and knowledge of Singapore history, are an advantage, but certainly not required.

\n\tWe'll have weekly lectures, and discussion groups meeting every other week.
\n\n\tInteractive and participatory learning is central to the module. While the reading load might initially seem heavy, much of the early material consists of extracts from longer works. The weekly lectures will involve some interactivity, and the discussion groups, held every other week, will consist of structured and unstructured discussions. There won't be any place for "sleepers"--make sure you have read the listed texts before the lectures and tutorials.
\n\n\tThe module will also have a related IVLE discussion forum, through which we'll supplement what happens in class, and prepare for in-class discussions. Note that postings there do contribute towards your grade.
