Throughout the semester, we will explore the range of authors and the dominant literary genres of the Victorian era, including the novel, poetry, and the essay. Along the way, we will examine the impacts of industrialization, the woman question, evolutionary science, and imperialism on Victorian writing. \n\t\t\t\t\tRequired Reading\n\t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\tThis module will takes seriously the words on either side of the “and” in its title by analyzing literary works within their historical context and vice-versa. Use MLA style for the format and citation of your papers, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins, and double-spaced. Attendance and participation (20%): Regular attendance and active participation by all students is one of the most important components of a successful module. Every student is expected to contribute actively to every lecture and tutorial. Lack of participation, inability to pay attention during lecture and tutorial, repeated tardiness, or unexcused absences will severely hurt your attendance and participation grade. Come to lecture and tutorial on time, having read the material, ready to discuss it and ask questions about it. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\t3. Index Card Responses (10%): At the end of every lecture, I will provide the class with a discussion question based on the week’s lecture and readings. Before our tutorial meeting, you will respond to this question on an index card. You will submit this card to me at the beginning of tutorial. Every week, I will select a card at random, and the person whose card I pick will begin our discussion by presenting his or her response. If you miss lecture, you will need to ask a classmate for the question. I will only present it during lecture. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\tI will read each card every week. Brief or inadequate responses will receive no credit, and outstanding responses will receive extra credit. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\tThese cards also serve as a record of your attendance.
